Today I am doing a comic every hour that I am awake, they may come in bursts durring the day as I get a chance so scan and upload
So the 52 Creative weeks project starts, and the first thing is the 52.adventuresofscott.com site. go there and find my video blogpost about this weeks project.
This is thing 1 of 52
Inspired by a bunch of different people and their creative output, I’ve made a decision – a resolution if you will – to be creative everyday, and to produce and put out at least 1 creative thing a week this year, and the Adventures of Scott is hopefully going to be a big part of it. To me, this includes:
- A comic, or comic page, depending on the project
- A Photo, or photo set
- A Story or substantial part thereof
- A really good and insightful blog post
- anything else cool I can think of
So thats it.
This is thing 0 of 52.
One problem with posting your old work, especially work that is going on 4 years old, is that you are fundamentally not satisfied with it because it isn’t up to your current standards. You see things that are technically problematic, a lot. Its easy to lose sight of what you were excited with on that work to begin with.
It’s worth it for me to remember why I write and draw comics: Having fun. I am under no illusion of being a great artist, and I know I need more practice as a writer, but I like being able to push myself and see a decernable improvement. Sometimes though it’s hard for me too see that this is supposed to be a fun endevor, and thats when things can slow down. On the bright side, I am having fun getting started now, and I can’t wait till You Can’t Go Home Again goes live. It’s not ready yet, so I think I shall keep to my schedule, but when it does go up I hope you see something new and fresh, and can tell that I am having fun.
Worked on comics last night for the for the first time in a good long while, mostly prep and writing stuff but I did do some sketching to get back into the practice. I haven’t decided whether the new story will be hand inked or digitaly inked but I do know one thing… my 4×5 graphire3 is not the best for working on a wide screen display. I’d love a 12″ Cintiq, or the little less spendy a 6×11 Intous3, but it turns out they are both spendier then I would like.
Fear not though, I did not need such fancy implements before and I shall not need them now. more coming soon.
So it turns out that I really want to restart the comic, so what I am doing is posting the comics from series 3 in prep for the all new series, which is based somewhat on where series 3 was going. So there is a lot of work to be done before the new story, You Can’t Go Home Again, starts. step one is done, getting comicpress up which was easy, now I have to re-customize the site, (though I really appreciate not having to re-wigetize the theme) and get 3 series up. Series 3 will go up one every Wednesdays, till its exhausted (which wont be long) and then You Can’t Go Home Again Will start.
I’m setting up my workflow now for YCGHA and even that will work differently then my old strips, for one its finally going to be a 300dpi workflow, and pages are going to be 6.625in by 10.25in. What does this mean for you the Webcomic reader, not much initially, but it means that I can in the future do books, if there became a reason to do so.
So I am excited and ready to show off something new!
Edit: I switched to comicspress, so I am going to have to redo the customizing that I mentioned below.
As I move ever closer to having a working site again I have been working on a wordpress theme to make the site look all spiffy, and also a matching style for non wordpress sections. While it still needs much tweeking I am getting happier with it now and hope to have it (and the corresponding sections of the site) done fairly soon.
If the design looks familiar to you, you are most chances one of my coworkers, I had originally done this design for myself, then after a few months brought it into work, where it stewed for more months. I ended up in my spare time at home, building it out to an XHTML page and then bringing it into work and adapting it for our intranet, but I decided to also re-work it for my personal site here, as I really like the basic design.
I hope to have the site proper out of development soon, but in the meantime continue to hold onto your hats as I continue to tweek – and completly rework – sections of this site.
